At the Red Cross, we are dedicated to providing physicians with the best blood products possible for their patients. Blood is tested for infectious diseases and blood type. We help physicians locate compatible blood products for their patients.
Patient Services
Through its patient testing services like the Penn-Jersey Immunohematology Reference Laboratory and Platelet Serology Laboratory, the National Reference Laboratory, and the HLA/Molecular Genetics Laboratory, Red Cross helps physicians resolve complex serological problems and identify rare blood. We help resolve blood typing issues so they can transfuse their patients safely.
Donor Testing
Medical advances in blood donor screening and testing have dramatically improved blood safety. Donors are screened and checked against a registry of ineligible blood donors and each blood donation is tested to reduce the risk of transfusion. The American Red Cross National Testing Laboratories (NTLs) are designed as high-throughput, streamlined laboratories to efficiently process and test donor samples and to release reliable results in a timely manner. With 50 years of donor blood testing experience with over seven million donations tested annually, the NTLs offer the expertise, technology and throughput capacity necessary to provided high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective donor blood testing.
